Thank you @JonLewis . I knew that it was the characteristics of the mandibles that differentiated the species but you have now made it clearer what to look for.

Hi Anna, your ID may well be right, but from what I can see of the mandibles in the photos, they look very straight along the outside edges which suggests it could be Myrmecia simillima, so I've left it at genus level. Cheers, Jon

@JonLewis they were under some wood or bark I flipped over, nest in the ground and they werent very fast/attacking.
