User's notes

the ants were probably only about 6 mm in length. They were swarming about a cleft in the trunk of a eucalypt, about 1.8 m up, which I took to be their nest site.

Hi Harvey, nice photos. The good feature for identifying these ants is in the third photo - a strongly "heart' shaped head. You can clearly see the shape of the head on the ant in the left. Combined with their colour and general shape it gives a good ID. These ants also tend to have a strong, fairly unpleasant odour when crushed. Cheers, Jon

Thanks, Jon. I'm glad I included that photo then - it was the only one that did have a view that showed the pronounced head shape, and jaws. I had little idea what might be important for ID purposes so tried to include everything I had. I didn't crush any so can't confirm on that aspect!
