Hi Alison, this ant could be one of several species of Iridomyrmex which are hard to tell apart unless they are under the microscope. The notes for I. suchieri in AntWiki gives a bit of context - "As with most of the other small and small-medium Iridomyrmex, the species has no notable features."

Probably no need Alison - all those ants are fairly common, but just difficult to ID from a normal photo. Cheers, Jon
